The film, written and directed by Schrader, follows William Tell (Isaac), a player and former official trying to reform a young man who wants revenge on a common enemy from his past. Tell him he just wants to play cards. His spartan existence on the casino floor is shattered when he meets Circus, a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help in implementing his plan of revenge against a military colonel. Tell sees through his connection with the Circus an opportunity for redemption. Tell is backed by mysterious gambling financier La Linde and takes Circus on tour, going from casino to casino until the amazing trio wants to win the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
